A History of Shotokan of Green Oaks
The first Shotokan of Green Oaks was opened in Illinois, in the
early 1960's by Master Richard C. Bieles (Doc). He opened a small dojo in his back yard for students. While still
teaching out of his small dojo, he went on to teach Karate at Waukegan High School. In the early 1970's Doc retired
from teaching martial arts on a full time basis and gave the school to Sensei Red Graham, who opened a dojo in Winthrop
Harbor, IL. Over the years the school has had many different buildings in three states: Winthrop Harbor, IL; Kenosha,
WI; and Spring Hill, FL. Affiliated schools have also been opened by Kyoshi's black belt students. As Kyoshi said,
"The dojo is not the building, but wherever I or my black belts are teaching."
